Meet Dr. Ross Greene

Author of The Explosive Child

Ross W. Greene, Ph.D. is the originator of Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS), as described in his influential books The Explosive Child, Lost at School, Lost & Found, Raising Human Beings, and The Kids Who Aren’t Okay: The Urgent Case for Reimagining Support, Belonging, and Hope in Schools (February 2026). He also developed and executive produced the documentary film, The Kids We Lose, released in 2018.

Dr. Greene served on the faculty at Harvard Medical School for over 20 years, and is now Founding Director of the non-profit Lives in the Balance, which aims to disseminate the CPS model and support caregivers through a vast array of free web-based resources; advocate on behalf of kids with concerning behaviours and their caregivers; and advocate for systemic changes to encourage the use of non-punitive, non-exclusionary interventions.

He is currently adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychology at Virginia Tech and adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Science at University of Technology Sydney in Australia. Dr. Greene’s research has been funded by the Stanley Research Institute, the National Institutes of Mental Health, the U.S. Department of Education, and the Maine Juvenile Justice Advisory Group.

He lectures and consults extensively to families, general and special education schools, inpatient psychiatry units, and residential and juvenile detention facilities around the world.

Q: Who is this workshop for?

A: This workshop is designed for professionals working with children and youth experiencing behavioural, social, emotional, and mental health challenges. Participants may include paediatricians, educators, school and system leaders, counsellors, psychologists, social workers, mental health professionals, child and youth care workers, healthcare providers, and community or residential support staff.

The workshop is relevant across school, clinical, community, inpatient, residential, and juvenile justice settings.


Q: Is this workshop for new or seasoned professionals?

A: Both new and seasoned professionals are welcome.

Q: What will I learn in the workshop?

A: By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the core principles of the Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS) model for supporting children and youth with challenging behaviour.

  • Recognize how lagging skills and unsolved problems contribute to behavioural challenges and difficulty managing frustration.

  • Identify triggers and use proactive strategies to address problems before behaviours escalate.

  • Differentiate between Plans A, B, and C and understand the purpose and impact of each approach.

  • Use collaborative conversations to reduce conflict, address roadblocks, and build problem-solving skills.

  • Apply trauma-informed, relationship-based strategies that improve connection, regulation, and outcomes for kids and youth.


Q: How long is the workshop?

A: This comprehensive training is ONE day in length, however, if you are interested in joining us for a three hour complex case consultation session the next day (Saturday), please email info@heathergood.ca to express your interest.

Fees for the additional session will be determined based on participant interest. If you have a facility where you would like to host this consultation, please contact Heather.

Q: Is lunch included?

A: No, lunch is not included. We will provide coffee, tea, water and a light snack for morning and afternoon breaks. The lunch will be approximately one hour.
